Pre-E3 2009: Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Multiplayer Hands-on That evergreen tree never knew what hit it… by Greg Miller
May 22, 2009 - The first Battlefield: Bad Company almost got me arrested in Germany -- no joke. After seeing the game in Leipzig a couple of years ago, the developers handed out stress balls that looked like grenades. Without thinking, I tossed it into my bag and forgot about it. When I went through airport security -- in a country where I could barely communicate with the citizens -- the guards weren't too pleased to find an item that looked like it could take out an airplane.
Recently, I played a bit of multiplayer in Battlefield: Bad Company 2, but this instance of blowing up everything in sight didn't end with dirty looks from random Germans.
Suit up for battle, soldier.

Quick Hit Will Let Players Pit Football Skills Against Legendary NFL Coaches
Wade Roush 8/25/09
Even if you were a coach in the National Football League, you’d never get a chance to test your tactics on the field against famous coaches like Brian Billick, Bill Cowher, Jimmy Johnson, Tom Landry, or Dan Reeves—because they’re all retired (and Landry is deceased). But that’s exactly what players will be able to do online at Quick Hit, the football strategy game to be launched next month by the Foxborough, MA, startup of the same name.
As I explained in my profile of Quick Hit back in May, the company’s game is a free, advertising-supported football simulator where players act as coaches, assembling a team of athletes with a variety of skills and choosing plays for them to run against the opposing team—which might be coached by another player, or might be an AI (a software program or “artificial intelligence,” in gamer lingo). Quick Hit announced today that in single-player mode, players will have the option of playing against AIs customized to recreate the styles of Billick, Johnson, Landry, and Reeves. (The company had already signed Cowher, the former Pittsburgh Steelers coach who is now a CBS Sports analyst, as its “head coach.”)
Of all the places you could stop for a fag break, this has to be the least relaxing - teetering on an icy ledge, several thousand feet up the side of a snow-covered mountain in the middle of enemy territory. Needless to say, 'Soap' McTavish, the star of CoD4 and now your companion in Modern Warfare 2, is harder than Tyrannosaurus teeth.
You'll discover that MW2 is all about stunning environments, and this vertigo-inducing backdrop that begins our demonstration is a perfect introduction to the sheer scale and beauty of what Infinity Ward is aiming for. Once McTavish has finished off his cigarette, it's back to scaling the sheer cliffs with ice-axes. It's a steady ascent, with Soap charging ahead of your character, Roach, like the seasoned pro he is.
All good things must come to an end, presumably with a bang and not a whimper, but in the case of Kratos, the antihero of the God of War franchise, he plans on going out by taking the Greek gods with him. Ever since the 2008 E3 trailer was shown, there has been a sense that this could be the bloodiest and wildest action game on any of Sony's consoles, particularly with Kratos standing atop a crumbling temple glaring at the destruction below. Apart from one trailer, details related to the final installment of the series have been practically non-existent until now. At a recent press event, Sony unveiled the latest information regarding God of War III, Kratos and the war against the gods. As Kratos said at the end of the E3 trailer, "In the end, there will be only chaos."
Stig Asmussen, the director of God of War III, started his presentation by mentioning that the development team had three main points that they wanted to focus on with God of War III: First, they wanted to wrap up the series by creating a game that would help define action for this generation of consoles and for the industry in general. That stood out as a bold statement, particularly considering that many people would argue that the first God of War titles broke barriers for action on the PS2 as well as the PSP. However, Asmussen felt like his team was up to the task, primarily because the majority of the design team has come from the first two games. The second element was working on creating groundbreaking moments of play, while the third facet was redefining the sense of scale in games to levels that had never been seen before.
E3 2009: I Have Met Milo ...And he called me by name. by Jeremy Dunham
June 3, 2009 - If you caught my impressions of Microsoft's Natal camera earlier this week, then you already know that I walked away impressed with what the technology can do. Unfortunately for me and IGN's readers, a chance to experience Peter Molyneux's show-stopping friend simulation, "Milo," just wasn't possible at the time.
But today I had my chance.
Now before I explain exactly how my experience with Milo worked, let me first direct you to our video of Milo and the Natal camera from Microsoft's Monday press conference. That clip will give you a clear picture of what the interaction with the character is supposed to be like, and help you understand why the validity of the demo has been in question ever since. After all, a game that can recognize the player by sight, call that player by name, and have a true interactive conversation with whoever is using it is quite a stretch of the imagination.
LucasArts and BioWare Reveal Star Wars: The Old Republic LucasArts and BioWare, a division of Electronic Arts Inc., today announced the development of Star Wars: The Old Republic, a story-driven massively multiplayer online PC game set in the timeframe of the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic franchise. Star Wars: The Old Republic, being developed and published by BioWare and LucasArts, represents an innovative approach to interactive entertainment, featuring immersive storytelling, dynamic combat and intelligent companion characters.
In Star Wars: The Old Republic, players will explore an age thousands of years before the rise of Darth Vader when war between the Old Republic and the Sith Empire divides the galaxy. Players can choose to play as Jedi, Sith, or a variety of other classic Star Wars roles, defining their personal story and determining their path down the light or dark side of the Force. Along the way, players will befriend courageous companions who will fight at their side or possibly betray them, based on the players' actions. Players can also choose to team up with friends to battle enemies and overcome incredible challenges using dynamic Star Wars combat.
"Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is the most critically acclaimed Star Wars game in LucasArts history and a preeminent example of our company's interactive storytelling heritage," said Darrell Rodriguez, President of LucasArts. "For a long time, we've wanted to return to the franchise in a grand way, and we felt that the best setting for it was an online world that would allow millions of people to participate in the experience together. We knew that the developer capable of working with us to deliver an engrossing story with a fully-realized online world was BioWare."

Peruse our game record for Splinter Cell Conviction and you’ll notice a preview from over two years ago…by a guy that doesn’t even work for TXB anymore. Yes, Conviction has been seriously delayed, but it appears as if Fish will finally be emerging from the shadows this Fall.
The Splinter Cell series has always been about stealth/action gameplay. While you’re privy to utensils that go boom, the idea is to only use boisterous weaponry if a mission goes awry—in-and-out unnoticed is how SC is meant to be played. Well, you can scrap the sneak-only philosophies for Splinter Cell Conviction, as it’s clear from our E3 demo of the latest build that Ubi Montreal is taking the series in a different direction.
Now, don’t go and assume that the stealth elements of Conviction are nonexistent, just because Sam gets to rough thugs up a bit, and takes pride in his gunplay. In fact, it appears that Splinter Cell Conviction is open ended enough (just like its predecessors) so that true stealth fans can still go about things in a swift-and-silent manner. But our demo featured blatant, brutal force, and we haven’t had any hands-on time to confirm just how docile Fisher’s calm-and-collective side is when attempting to avert face-to-face confrontation.
Normally, the announcement of something, anything, from the Halo universe is a big, big deal at E3. While Halo 3: ODST is a big deal for Halo fans, it’s clear the uber-tease (in fact, I don’t even know if the Reach trailer is a tease—more like a CGI space tour) about the secretive Reach project overshadowed this meaty, multi-disc installment of Bungie’s prodigious IP.
A quick note for those planning on holding onto their ducats until Reach extends to store shelves: The “Extras” section of disc one of Halo 3: ODST will be the launch point for Reach’s multiplayer beta. This makes it wise to invest in the Halo universe sooner than later—besides, ODST’s dual-DVD’s are jam-packed, and appear worth the money for a Halo 3 episode pack…at least from what I gathered during a twenty minute demo at E3.
Battlefield 1943 is the latest MP only game from DICE and EA. It is the Xbox 360 and PS3 remake of the 2001 game, BF 1942, and features 3 maps from the original and 3 classes on the Frostbite engine. It features unlimited ammo and regenerating health as well. Was released on Xbox 360 on July 8, 2009 and the PSN on July 9, 2009
Upon first hearing about the regenerating health and unlimited ammo I was pretty skeptical about the game. It seemed it was going to be a more "casual" game like Call of Duty where anyone can pick it up and play with no trouble. Upon playing it yesterday and more extensively earlier today I saw that the game was really well built and very balanced. Despite the regenerating health and the unlimited ammo, the game still proves quite a challenge to those who are new to it. The classes too, are easy to use, but hard to get good at as they all have their pros and cons. Infantry classes are equipped with a sub machine gun (Thompson or T100), bazooka, wrench and grenades. They are useful at close to medium range, but useless at longer ranges. Riflemen classes are equipped with a long range rifle (M1 Garand or T5), rifle grenades, bayonet, and grenades. Are great at medium and long range, though suffer when it comes to CQC or against tanks. Snipers are equipped with a sniper rifle (Springfield or K98k), demo charges, pistol (M1911 or Nambu) and knife or katana. They are useful from longer ranges than the rifleman class, but the farther away the harder the shot and the harder to kill due to bullet travel time. They can also stand a chance against tanks with their demo charges as well in CQC with their pistol.

Pasta Padre's E3 Preview:
The improvements to Madden 10 were quickly evident at E3. Many of them are visual which means you’re immediately exposed to them and they are impossible to miss. Others such as the game speed are readily apparent as well. That suited it well to the environment that E3 offers where time with the game can be limited and the crowds can affect the experience. Reaction to Madden has been overwhelmingly positive for the most part and it received multiple “Game of E3″ nominations while there. Continue on for my impressions from the event.
Presentation received a huge upgrade as everyone is well aware of. The videos I put up show a good mix of what has been done with the pregame activities and player warm-ups, numerous variations of cut scenes, halftime highlights, coaches handshake or player of the game being seen interviewed, and the post-game highlights. They all come across naturally and within rhythm of the game. You could even look at details such as the rain and snow hitting the camera lens which everyone loved the look of. There certainly is more that can be done in the future, especially specific to certain players or stadiums, but it is an immensely impressive job they’ve been able to do over the course of just one year.

After responding to a ton of Madden NFL 10 player ratings requests in the previous posting I took on the task of putting them all together in a document. Included are the full rosters, overall ratings, and at many positions the speed and acceleration ratings.
I am really looking forward to seeing how the spread out ratings affect the game. It makes the strengths and weaknesses of each team apparent and depth becomes more important. Users will have to strategically consider each team’s personnel. It should really open things up with the games better resembling what would be seen in the NFL.
